children's hands-on museum

friday morning, we drove over to the children's hands-on museum in tuscaloosa with some friends. heather threw it up on our moms group calendar and since we've never been, i definitely wanted to give it a go. we arrived around 10:00 in the morning and let the kids explore their way throughout the different little areas. there was so much to do, and i thought the set up of everything was super cute. the fine little details, old artifacts that brought the exhibits to life, and the fact that the place wasn't crowded one bit was confirmation of the perfect little day trip. oh, and pretend play? that glorified imagination was dripping everywhere. the girls were having a blast. here they are playing dress up in everything from "little house on the prairie" outfits to extravagant princess ones.after walking through and exploring around, we arrived at the barnyard area. hmmm...hello cullman county, we have arrived. they got to push chicken eggs through the chicken coop, pick vegetables from the garden then place them in the produce bins, feed the animals, and then drive the truck off with baskets of produce in the back. let's be honest: pawpaw would have been proud. because you can take the girl outta the country, but you can't take the country outta the girl. it was great. oh, and don't dare try to tell lyla that you can't fit a circle through a triangle. because clearly, you can. she's so strong, she made it happen. love that little one.okay, so i walked into this part and automatically felt a twinge in my heart for obvious reasons. it was the faux hospital exhibit and when we walked through the door, i swear flashbacks of nursing school came to mind. the set up was spot on. the nurses station, the equipment room, the nursery (where babies come from!)...they even had doctors calling on line 2 of the telephone calling in orders. my gawd, it was all too familiar and you'd better believe that my kid was going to enjoy playing "dress up" and pretend as a nurse. so lyla did (the mabster was busy making paper mache'). she donned a scrub top and surgical hat. she fed a baby a bottle while in the nursery. my heart immediately melted. here are some pics...next, we came across the area that i know daddy would have enjoyed most. the other half of cullman county: boating and fishing. the girls put on their life vests (safety first, people) and acted out as if they were driving the big steamboat around as they steered, pushed buttons, and blew the big horn. YB and i even staged a quick pic. c'mon now, did you honestly think we wouldn't? that's what i thought. also, there was a dock set up right beside the boat where the kids could go fishing at. the mabster caught a big fish, and then lyla turned it into sushi while at the japan house. so.stinkin.cute.overall, it was a great day of pretend play. both girls absolutely loved the museum and when asked what the mabster's favorite was, she replied, "making my decoration ball." yup, this is where she spent a good half of the visit in the craft room using copious amounts of elmer's glue to decorate her ball made out of paper mache.' it was beautiful, sticky, and a big ole mess, but it was hers. lucky me, we got to take it home and i shoved it in the diaper bag during the rest of the visit. a couple of hours later, it was time for lunch where we walked across the street and all ate at mellow mushroom. all in all, a great day. definitely have to do that again soon.
