NICU: day 12

LOOKOUT WORLD, I'VE GOT EYEBALLS!!!! so laugh if you will, but for as long as sweet baby jemma has been in the NICU...we've only seen her open her eyes maybe once. and that was a small squint. granted she's been heavily sedated at times, her face was swollen so it was hard to do so along with the factor that she's 1/4 Filipino (snicker, snicker) and it seems understandable. in all honesty, i guess we just expected to see those pretty little eyeballs sooner than later. the nurses have been telling us that she opens them, but it's usually when she's mad and doesn't like being messed with. now i understand why we always saw them closed. jay said she just stared at him the whole time he was there...today's events include: infectious disease is recommending 4 weeks of antibiotics (so she will remain in NICU for at least 2 more weeks) to help with the growth on her mitral valve. the results from her head ultrasound today is stable and they plan to do a head CT to check on bleed and hydrocephalus tomorrow to determine how she needs to be followed. her oxygen from 21-24% at half liter via nasal cannula. dr. karle has been very happy with her progress. right now, she's just getting saline and some maintenance fluids and has the one IV line in her belly. the occupational therapist came by today to try and feed her by a bottle, but sweet baby jemma spit it up so they will come back and assess her again in a couple of days. she is currently taking 35cc of breastmilk via her OG tube. daddy soaked up some good lovin' on you tonight. admittedly, mommy is a little jealous, but i know once this crud has left my nasal passages, i'll be holding you and gazing into those sweet lil eyeballs in no time. we love you, jemma aubrey. good night, sleep tight. xoxolastly, after picking up the girls from school today (HELLO, ROUTINE!! how i have missed thee.), abby showed me the super cute and thoughtful book that her classmates and teachers put together for baby jemma. each kid and teacher drew a picture with a decorated pink bear on it, wrote "i love you, baby jemma" and signed their names. i absolutely fell in love with it. these kind of things are my favorite because obviously, i am such a sugary sap for sentiment. thank you so much, you guys. we will keep it forever and ever, amen.

Glad to hear that sweet Jemma is doing better. I have been checking your blog daily to find out how she is doing. It is heartwarming, and inspiring to hear her daily progress. We are still saying prayers that she will be all better soon, and get to go home to her family!
