NICU: day 8 (st. patty's day)

(fair warning: i will try not to ramble in this blog post. REPEAT: i will try NOT to ramble in this blog post. instead, i will provide mostly pictures. because after all, a picture is worth a thousand words, no? and so it begins...)

this morning, jay called up to the hospital to ask how sweet baby jemma was doing. the nurse reported that her spinal tap results were negative so they have discontinued her antibiotics for that. yay for no meningitis! her blood counts are improving better with each day and are now stable. they have her on a methadone withdrawal protocol to help her off all the pain meds that she has been on. also, she is doing good, but had some residual in her tummy from her feeding earlier today so they bumped her back down to 3 cc of breast milk. great day, right? well it gets even better...

sweet baby jemma is officially off the ventilator, YAY!!!

which means...

WE GET TO HOLD HER FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE BEING IN THE NICU!!!!!!
(can you feel our excitement!?)

so her nurse karen tells jay to "grab kim and ya'll both get down here...since you were the first to feed her yesterday, kim needs to be the first to hold her." see my friends, THAT is why i love nurses. especially nurses who are mothers themselves...they just **KNOW** hehe. so jay calls me up from work (he took a half day) and tells me to get ready. i call up stacy and ask if she doesn't mind watching the girls for us real quick. jay picks us up, we drop off the girls for a st. patty's day playdate, and head to the hospital. here's a pic of abby and lyla while playing with friends...off to children's we go! we anxiously enter the NICU and see our sweet baby girl. at first she was a wee bit mad as the nurse began moving her around and unhooking certain tubes, cords, etc. fortunately, i was able to calm her down. talk about job security, i've still got it. :P she laid in my arms as i stared at her for about an hour. augh, i could have sat there ALL.DAY.LONG. she wrapped her little hand around my finger and immediately, i turned into putty her her hands. baby jemma, you have completely made our day. then daddy got to hold her and it was the sweetest sight. we love you so much, baby girl. here are some pics...we left some time around 1:00pm and let her continue to sleep. jay and i then had a hot lunch date at our favorite college joint, al's deli. we sat outside on the patio since the weather was absolutely amazing and listened as the birds chirped and flew all around us. it was very mary poppins'esque if you will. then we picked up food for the kiddos and headed back to pick them up at stacy's house. came home, vegged out for a couple of hours, and the dropped the girls off at tita karla's so that they could play with cousin carson while we made one more quick trip up to the hospital around 7:00pm. sweet baby jemma was resting and the nurse reported that they still couldn't insert the PICC line on the 2nd try so the IV lady is coming up tomorrow to try again. crossing fingers that 3rd time is the charm. we come home and eat a lovely dinner of corn beef and cabbage that nan made for us in honor of st. patty's day. it has truly been one blessed and lucky day. lastly, i'll leave you with an old Irish blessing that deems fitting right now...

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
